The short explanation of this alert was:
The recent deadline to pass a new Farm Bill by March 15 has come and gone - and a new bill has still not been passed. Another temporary extension of the old bill has reset the game clock, but it is quickly ticking towards the new deadline of April 18. Discussions are still underway to resolve differences between the House, Senate and administration over funding levels, ways to pay for that funding and adequate levels of reform. These are the same discussions that have been occurring since December.

One thing is clear: conservation efforts will suffer if this delay continues and a new Farm Bill is not passed by April 18, 2008. The conservation title of the Farm Bill represents the largest single federal investment to conservation on private land. Important existing programs like the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) and the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) will lose funding and risk elimination if a new bill is not signed. Moreover, failure to pass a Farm Bill means new and innovative ideas benefiting conservation and sportsmen such as Sodsaver and Open Fields provisions will be left out.

Please make your voice heard today and let our leaders know that a new Farm Bill must be passed by April 18 if America is to continue the gains made in improved soil and water quality and healthy fish and wildlife habitat - we cannot afford to go backwards. Please urge them to find a compromise quickly and produce a final bill that provides competitive funding and sound conservation policies to benefit farmers, ranchers and fish and wildlife.
