The short explanation of this alert was:

The 2007 Farm Bill is currently being debated and written in Congress.  The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee is expected to consider the bill sometime in October - perhaps as soon as this week!  Much needed funding sources for conservation programs are also being considered in the Senate Finance Committee this month as well.  This critical time will determine the future of Farm Bill conservation programs for the next five years.  Two of the most popular programs, the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) and the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP), are at risk of being eliminated altogether.  These programs begin this new Farm Bill debate with zero dollars and additional money must be found in order for them to continue.

In order to renew WRP and GRP, as well as continue the vital investments begun in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP), Environmental Quality Enhancement Program (EQIP) and other programs, conservation funding in the 2007 Farm Bill needs to be increased by at least $6 billion over the next five years.  It is important that your Senators hear from you on this issue!  Please take a minute to send them an email asking them to increase funding for conservation in the Farm Bill so that WRP, GRP and other important programs that are vital to the protection of fish and wildlife habitat can be continued.
